Ford is partnering with actor Idris Elba for the launch of the automaker’s first fully electric crossover, said to be inspired by the iconic Mustang. Elba will appear in promotional materials as part of a “creative partnership” for the new model after it debuts November 17. A teaser photo shows Elba walking among a field of historic Mustangs including a current-generation Mustang Bullitt, an original Mustang Mach 1, and a first-generation Mustang fastback.
We know Idris Elba from the most recent Fast & Furious spinoff movie Hobbs & Shaw, but the British actor also worked at Ford in his early days. “It’s [Ford] practically in my blood,” Elba said in a statement. “So working on this project and getting behind the wheel of a car that takes us all towards the future feels like things are coming full circle, but with more exhilaration and tech.”
Ford will share tons more info about the Mach E on November 17, but we already know a fair amount about it ahead of the reveal. Ford claims that the all-electric crossover will have an driving range of 300 miles, and from what we’ve seen, the company isn’t kidding around in claiming that the design is Mustang inspired. The headlights take direct styling cues from the 2020 Mustang, and the EV even has those famous three-bar taillights. It could also be adorned with Mustang badges.
We can expect Ford’s electric crossover to start somewhere around $40,000 when it goes on sale in 2020. Stay tuned for all the details of Ford’s upcoming all-electric crossover when it debuts on November 17 at the Los Angeles auto show, and for the promotional materials featuring Idris Elba.
